Cue up Donna Summer’s song “Last Dance” — it’s my last column as NALP President! Serving as your 2018-2019 President has been a joy and a privilege. I feel incredibly lucky to have been placed in this role, at this time. Every time I gave an opening welcome, led a meeting or webinar, or talked to a member, it was an honor. At our last Board of Directors meeting, Director Melanie Priddy challenged me to think about what I have learned as a result of serving as NALP President. It has been a long and full year, and the list of things I have learned is endless. Here are three.
Each April, we get to come together with like-minded and equally sore-chinned colleagues to debrief, de-stress, teach, and learn in an environment that at a minimum can be described as collegial, and at best can be described as nurturing. I mean, in what other professional organization can you leave it all on the dance floor rocking out to “Uptown Funk” one night and learn about bimodal salary distribution curves the next morning? But this is not a review of the conference or a plug for next year’s event (although, let’s face it, Montreal will be fabulous!). NALP recently submitted public comments to each court explaining its position on this critical issue: maintaining a national accreditation system is vital for the success and longevity of legal careers.

The NALP Board of Directors has announced provisional timing guidelines for the 2010 recruiting cycle, adopting a 28-day rolling response deadline for candidates not previously employed by the employer, and a November 1 response deadline for candidates who have been previously employed by the employer.
The fifth annual Diversity Summit, co-sponsored by NALP and the Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals, will take place on June 11 in Chicago.
Three plenary sessions and six sets of concurrent sessions will be packed into the two-day 2010 Professional Development Institute (PDI) convening December 9-10 in Washington, DC.
