In January I had the good fortune to attend the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) in New Orleans. It’s such a complicated city. If you remember that this was the title of the debut album for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, then you are experienced. Even if you do not, you are still experienced. The NALP Experienced Professionals Section includes members who self-identify as having at least eight years of experience in the legal industry and have actively participated in NALP. I would argue that we as legal professionals become experienced sooner than that and can benefit from a cohort that can provide mentorship and guidance at critical stages in our career.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Sally Yates speak at the Equal Justice Works Career Fair & Conference in Washington, DC this year. I had not attended this event before, and was incredibly impressed by the organization and professionalism on display. The positive energy was palpable, and it was easy to see the value of the experience for the students and the employers. Ms. Yates, currently of King & Spalding, formerly of the Department of Justice, had five pieces of advice. While the guidance was directed at the adoring law students in the audience, it easily translates for all of us.
On November 29, 2018, more than 400 professionals from across the country gathered for the 2018 Professional Development Institute (PDI) sponsored by NALP and ALI CLE in cooperation with the Professional Development Consortium. The two-day conference, held at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington, DC, featured seminars, panel discussions, and interactive dialog, including two plenary programs and an array of 33 concurrent sessions. Sessions addressed topics such as best practices in mid-level training, innovative approaches to associate feedback, law firm coaching, and diversity and leadership training.

Before the Annual Education Conference Planning Team meeting, we each carefully reviewed the thoughtful feedback you submitted for future conferences, which was compiled in our outreach call research and in the conference evaluations from San Francisco. The first order of business at our meeting was to discuss and make suggestions based on your comments. I am pleased to share aspects of the "fresh take" you will experience at the 2018 Annual Education Conference.
For us, August means the overlap between the end of the summer program and the beginning of “fall” recruiting, résumé review and call-back scheduling, anxious 2Ls and incoming 1Ls. Many NALPers are put to the test during this season. And even if August isn’t your “testing” season, you certainly have one at some point during the year. As recruiting, diversity, and talent development professionals in our organizations, we focus our time and energy on developing programs and strategies to help others succeed — our students, recruits, and lawyers — and, in the process, to help our organizations succeed. We equip students and lawyers with the coaching, training, and support needed to become leaders. But what about us? We can’t be effective in our positions unless we also focus on developing our own leadership skills.
Where did 2018 go? For that matter, where has January 2019 gone? I choose to believe time speeds up not because I am aging, but because I am anxious or excited about what lies ahead. I am certain that is the reason why 2018 and the month of January have flown by. I am filled with energy and excitement for NALP’s next business cycle and I look forward to being at the helm.
